Our first week as interns has presented us with a variety of different states of being. Exciting, thought-provoking, challenging, and rewarding are all relevant terms when applied to week one. We've worked under a knowledgeable staff in the fields and during chores, experienced a week of lesson with Bob (which is an experience unlike any other in many ways), and have been existing within the natural beauty of Northern California. Our bodies are a little cut up and sore, as we're still physically adapting to our new (temporary) day-to-day experiences. However, I believe our biggest challenge yet, as a group, has been adapting to communal living. Putting eleven people of all different backgrounds, ages, and personalities together in one house in an unfamiliar environment has proved to be a learning experience for us all. Despite our ups and downs, each and everyone of us has displayed a genuine attempt at honest, open communication with one another. As eager as I am to learn as much as possible about the Green String approach to farming, I am grateful for witnessing a small group of people willing to try their best to both appreciate and respect those around them, regardless of their physical or emotional condition at the present moment. It has been a truly eye-opening culmination of tiny moments that has ultimately revealed some very wonderful aspects of the human condition, enduring a very human experience.
